UFC's Bantamweight #1 Contender
You could hear the gasps throughout the T-Mobile Area. Oddsmakers and onlookers watched with bated breath as Julianna Peña traded strikes with Amanda Nuñes during a heart-stopping standup exchange going into the second round of their first match at UFC 269. Then, Peña affixed a rear naked choke on Nuñes. What followed was what Joe Rogan called the "biggest upset in UFC history." Referee Mike Beltran stopped the fight at three minutes and twenty-six seconds into the second round. All 18,479 attendees erupted in applause. Despite the 11-1 odds, Peña dethroned Nuñes and derailed her 12-fight win streak, becoming the only fighter to submit "The Lioness," earning the UFC Women's Bantamweight title via a victory without precedent. Everyone was shocked–except Peña. Because for "The Venezuelan Vixen," it was a moment manifested, a destiny designed long before she was thrust into the spotlight that night. Over her 14-year career as a fighter, the mother of one has developed a penchant for punishing opponents. The Spokane, Washington native was never a stranger to scrapping. As the youngest of four–one brother and two sisters–she was routinely on the receiving end of bigger sibling beatdowns. Peña joined a women’s cardio kickboxing class at 19, discovered mixed martial arts at 20 years old in 2009, and made her amateur debut that same year, going 2-0, then 4-0 as a professional. After defeating Jessica Rakoczy, she became the first woman to win The Ultimate Fighter in 2013 On October 14th, 2017, four years after her TUF victory, Peña announced her pregnancy and stepped away from the cage. "My goal is to have my baby, love my baby, then get back into the Octagon," she told Jessica Holland following the announcement. Peña did both. Her daughter Isabella Cruz Alejandre-Peña was born in January 2018. Then, less than a year and a half later, she stepped in on short notice to face former UFC champion Nicco Montano. Peña won via decision and secured one of the most significant victories of her career at the time. After besting Montano, she faced Germaine De Randamie in October 2020 and lost via third-round submission. She met Sara McMann in the Octagon on January 2021 and won via third-round submission before defeating Nuñes on December 2021. Peña appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience and the Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she revealed to guest host Mario Lopez, a lifelong martial artist, and BJJ blue belt, that she and Nuñes would coach Season 30 of The Ultimate Fighter. The series premiered in May 2022. Following the season, Peña and Nuñes faced off again in a rematch for the Bantamweight title, which Nuñes won via decision. Peña is currently the #1 ranked UFC Women's Bantamweight and the #3 ranked pound-for-pound, active female fighter on the roster. She is now the face of 'No B.S.' skincare, a Venezuelan woman-owned brand sold at CVS and other national retailers. Her endorsers include Jones Soda, Columbia Care, Wesana Health, Tyson 2.0, BET99, and tech company Fyllo.
