Dr. Courtney L. Flowers is an Associate Professor of Sport Studies at Texas Southern University. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Sport Management from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Science degree in Sport Administration from Grambling State University, and Bachelor of Science in Biology from Mississippi Valley State University.
She empowers individuals to celebrate differences and build environments which value equity beyond a compliance-driven process as a Diversity and Inclusion consultant for Adaptive Industrial Services.
Her teaching and research focus on sport law and exploring the systemic gender and racial based forms of bias and prejudice in college sports. Her research has been featured in the Sport Litigation Alert, Legal Issues in College Athletics, The International Journal of the History of Sports, and The Journal of Negro Education.
Dr. Flowers is an advocate for women’s sports and has built her career focused on breaking down the gendered and racial barriers in sports. Recently, she co-authored the Women’s Sports Foundation’s report, “50 Years of Title IX: We Are Not Done Yet”, She has helped to give a voice to the plight facing Black women in college sports and is also known for highlighting Title IX challenges which hinder equity in college sports.
She has twenty years of experience in sports and college athletics which includes being a former NCAA DI golfer who has worked for the United States Golf Association, the former National Minority Golf Foundation, The First Tee, and several junior golf programs.
Additionally, she is the Secretary of Sport for the International Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Sport, and Dance and is an Advisory Board member for Spry a company which facilitates Name, Image, & Likeness for college & high school athletics.
Dr. Flowers is an active member of Wasserman – The Collective, North American Society for the Sociology of Sport, and the Sport Recreation and Law Association.
