Pelado Real Futebol Clube
Julia Vergueiro is the owner and president of Pelado Real Futebol Clube, the biggest girls and women's only soccer academy in Brazil. She participated in the Global Sports Mentoring Program in 2018, attending the espnW summit that year, and is now back to pass the torch to the new group.
Julia - who is also a blogger for espnW Brazil - hopes to further demonstrate the potential of women's soccer in her country and the way supporting its growth can positively impact brands. Through the increased visibility of her work, and the business skills and networking she was exposed to on the exchange, she was able to implement new projects such as a scholarship program for Brazilian female soccer players to study in the United States.
"In Brazil, regardless of whether you are rich or poor, you will suffer discrimination for being a girl. If you are a girl, you must be polite; you must be a princess. For many of us, sport is the one space where it's okay to yell and run. Sport challenges the ideas girls face every day at home or in school about gender. On the soccer field, we rediscover a different part of what it means to be a woman."
