State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley
State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, is the lead author of Senate Bill 206, the Fair Pay to Play Act, which California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law on Sept. 27, 2019. The signing of SB 206 made California the first state in the nation to allow college athletes, beginning in 2023, to earn money from their name, image, and likeness, such as endorsement deals or other work related to their athletic talent. Before winning election to the California state Senate in 2016, Skinner served six years in the state Assembly. She is the Senate Majority Whip and her legislative areas of interest include social justice and gender equity issues, criminal justice reform, housing, and the environment.
